  The public ARPS package is upgraded to ARPS5.3.4. This is the after spring experiment version in 2013. Please refer to file HISTORY in the package for latest changes. The new ARPS package can be downloaded here.

  CAPS usually makes a new release of the ARPS package after each spring experiment. This year we have made a significant upgrade of our forecast system with ARPS5.3. The ARPS5.3 software package has existed for a while, but it was limited within CAPS and collaborators. After thoroughly tests with the spring experiments, we have decided to release ARPS5.3.3 as the first public version for general use.

 All of the ARPS5.3 software interfaces have been rewritten with a 5D scalar array that can be used to include (theoretically) any number of scalar fields that can be diffused and advected. Adding advection/diffusion equations for additional fields is easier, so will be the history I/O, etc. Other major software updates include:
- Milbrandt-Yau  multimoment microphysic schemes;
- a Runge-Kutta integration scheme;
- upgraded support for the WRF system (version 3.3.1 so far).
The new package can be downloaded here.

  The latest ARPS version is arps5.2.8, and arps5.2.9 that has been thoroughly tested in 2008 CAPS Spring real-time experiments (April 16 - June 6, 2008) will be released soon. We are also working on arps5.3, which will incorporate more physical schemes, especially microphysical schemes, and will also contain ARPSEnKF - an Ensemble Kalman Filter data assimilation system for the ARPS system.
  A recent publication by ARPS users Kwinten Van Weverberg follows:

  The ARPS Version 5.0 Beta8 is our last freely available version.
                The last Fortran 77 version is 4.5.1. The latest version is called
                arps5.0.0IHOP_5, a temporal name for versions starting from its
                use for IHOP 2002 real time forecast. Since this version contains
                codes developed by WDT, there are license issues related to its
                use for commerical purposes. The ARPS
                Download page spells out the licensing agreement when you
                click on the Lastest Release link.

               Links to Part I and Part II of the ARPS description papers
                can be found at the Document section.
                Another MAP Special issure paper on the status of ARPS and data
                assimilation can also be found at the same site.

   ARPS Version 4.5.2 is available (for a while now) at
        the ARPS download site.
        It could well be the last maintanance version of ARPS in Fortran 77. The
        most significant change in this version (since 4.5.1) is a bug fix related
        to MPI run.

  Status of ARPS 5.0: ARPS Version
          5 Beta (arps5.5.0Beta2b currently) is now available at the same
          server. Version 5.0 is in Fortran 90 free format, converted according
          to ARPS Fortran
          90 coding standard. Dynamic memory allocation has been implmented
          for most programs, and they have been used internally for research and
          real time forecast for the past two months. Some
          issues still remain (see also HISTORY for a rough list). For example,
          the adative grid feature is broken in this version and dynamic memory
          allocation has yet to be implemented in several less-often used programs.
          This version does require a Fortran 90 compiler. On Intel Linux platform,
          Portland Group's pgf90 is supported
          in makearps.
